An open letter to myself

Light shining through after the storm

The person you were before that chemical crash and burn is the true you, the authentic you, the unique you. That is the you people love. Don’t ever doubt that.

And you are still here, getting sharper and clearer by the day. Soon you will be fully yourself again, with some new dents and scratches and a few extra scars. But you are still the same you. You are still the you that was liked the way you were, no fuss, and you will be liked like that again. Just be patient.

Remember, you don’t deserve to be picked apart, criticised, told what to say or not, do or not, be or not. You are good enough as you are, you’re a good person. You’re the type of person that thrives on being kind and helping other people grow and thrive. You are already great in your own way.

Those experiences and the aftermath changed parts of you, but it didn’t change everything about you. You shouldn’t live in fear of others’ judgement, impressions, or hurt feelings. Not anymore, never again. You do you and you’ll do fine.

You can still make people laugh, feel good, and grow under your care. That’s who you are, that’s what you do. And it’s a beautiful you. You are still that empathetic, altruistic, honest and open, few filters, full of words, listening ears, and frank you that shines through any darkness. Be the you that people still and will remember. The unequivocally uniquely you.

You made it this far, you went through all the motions and found your way back. Be proud of yourself. You are allowed to feel, to react, and to respond with emotions. Never feel ashamed of being that emotionally raw you, the authentic you, the genuine you.

You are never responsible for other people’s feelings, thoughts, actions or reactions. That’s how it all fell apart, remember? You tried diminishing yourself to satisfy the needs of others, to please by removing your boundaries and dismantling your defenses. It almost put out your light. Don’t let that happen again, you are much too important.

You are needed, loved, and wanted. You belong here. And you are still here. You’re returning fully and completely and you didn’t really change much. You kept your core self intact. You shine.

So be unapologetically you.

And no one can break you.
